D.C. playwright Karen Zacarias (The Book Club Play, Mariela in the Desert, Looking for Roberto Clemente) teams up with Arena's own Artistic Director Molly Smith for this time-bending tale of discovery -- both scientific and maternal. Enter the world of Emilie du Chatelet, an 18th century physicist in love with - but unfaithful to - the renowned writer and philosopher Voltaire. Jump forward to the present day world of Olivia, also a physicist, enjoying a satisfying marriage and career but feeling an astonishing pull toward motherhood. Their stories relate in suprising ways; both women fear that their choices will cost them their dreams of scientific immortality. A riveting drama with unexpected twists, this Arena-commissioned play brings a new voice to our stages -- one that speaks with great eloquence on two women's quest for knowledge and love. |

March 26, 27, 28. Five Performances Only!
Arguably Harold Rome's greatest masterpiece, certainly his most lush and romantic score, this musicalization of Pagnol's MARIUS trilogy was the first musical produced by the legendary David Merrick. It opened on Broadway in 1954 and starred Ezio Pinza and Walter Slezak, and introduced audiences to Florence Henderson in the title role. S.N. Behrman & Joshua Logan's incisive and funny book cleverly highlights the gems in Rome's score to tell a moving and warm story of romance in Marseilles.

Check out the following articles/reviews on the Arena Stage's production of CAMELOT.
Arena, Working On Knight Moves (Washington Post, 12/9/2003)
Mini-review of CAMELOT from The Washington Post (12/12/03)
"C'est moi!" Matt Bogart sings, encased in armor for his enthralling entrance as Lancelot du Lac in an opulent new "Camelot." C'est him, indeed. As befits a hero of the Round Table, Bogart's arrival comes just in the nick of time, providing a problematic Lerner and Loewe musical from 1960 with one of the brief shining moments it so urgently requires.
In many cases, the too-good-to-be-true Lancelot is almost laughable, especially when he sings his signature song, an ode to his perfection, "C'est Moi." Yet, Matt Bogart exudes such tenderness and romanticism, he pulls off "C'est Moi" with aplomb. Lanky and handsome, he certainly looks the part of Lancelot, and his charged portrayal of the knight escapes any trace of ridiculousness.
Matt Bogart, who earlier this year seemed such a mid-western enchanter as the magical Starbuck in SignatureÕs 110 In The Shade, is now quite convincing as a French enchanter as Lancelot in this timeless triangle. His ÒIf Ever I Would Leave YouÓ is so drenched with emotion it soars and his ÒCÕest MoiÓ is both more complex and more compelling than the recordings of previous Lancelots made it seem.
If during the first fifteen minutes into the evening you find yourself looking for the nearest exit, take heart. Once the energetic Matt Bogart bounces on the scene as Lancelot du Lac, the show finally begins. Smith does a fine job with the scenes from there, but without Bogart's stirring rendition of "C'est, Moi," one might pass the time by admiring Kate Edmunds' set and John Ambrosone's gorgeous lighting plot, or even hoping that Paul Tazewell's exotic furs and leathers are of the compassionate faux variety. Bogart infuses the stage--and even the other actors--with enough charisma that we finally begin to appreciate Steven Skybell's mature Arthur and Kate Suber's child-like Guenevere. Suddenly everyone has spring fever: there's a maypole, a unicorn, a picnic, a big fluffy dog, and even Baayork Lee's choreography. Suddenly it's a different show. And we are grateful.
Talkin' Broadway Review - 12/10/03
Bogart is quite charming as the upstanding knight and connects well with Skybell. He also proves to be a successful romantic figure - especially during the beautifully performed, "If Ever I Would Leave You."
...when Lancelot (Matt Bogart) sings "If Ever I Would Leave You" to Guenevere. Only one word can describe his voice at this moment - perfect.

Check out today's New York Times' review of COMPANY. There's also a great photo of Matt with Alice Ripley on that page.
"...Alice Ripley portrays Amy, the reluctant bride who sings the showstopping "Getting Married Today," as something more than the usual cartoon neurotic.
Ms. Ripley here wears her lush beauty as if she would like to tear it off, and there's a plaintive air of apology behind Amy's harshness with the patient Paul (sweetly embodied by Matt Bogart). Their scene together has never been funnier or sadder." ~Ben Brantley (NY Times)
